Sometimes, the most important stories are the hardest to tell.
When Senior Men’s player and Assistant Coach Adam Shaw approached the club about hosting a Beyond Blue Mental Health Match, it wasn’t just an idea. It came from a deeply personal place.
Over the past year, Adam has experienced what he describes as his “rock bottom”. But he’s also discovered that rock bottom didn’t have to be the end of his story.
Through connection, reaching out, rebuilding a routine, focusing on his physical health and taking life one day at a time, Adam has slowly begun rebuilding himself. He says one of the greatest lessons he’s learnt is that healing isn’t about doing it alone. It’s about accepting support, leaning on the people around you and knowing that even the smallest check-in or conversation can make an enormous difference.
Today, Adam says he’s never felt more proud of the person he’s becoming.
Adam is incredibly grateful that St Mary’s embraced the idea of a Beyond Blue Mental Health Match and helped turn something deeply personal into something positive for the wider community.
“Clubs like ours are more than football and netball. They’re places where people belong, where people are seen, and where conversations can start.”
That’s exactly what we hope this round will achieve.
“I used to read messages like this and my head would tell me to stay quiet. But I had to speak up and take action. If sharing my story encourages even one person to reach out, it’s worth it.”
From 17-19 July, we’ll come together to raise funds and awareness for Beyond Blue, while reminding our own community that no one should have to face their toughest moments alone.
If Adam’s story resonates with you, we’d love your support. Every donation helps Beyond Blue continue providing free support and resources to Australians experiencing anxiety, depression and difficult times.
Together, let’s show that our club is about more than the game. It’s about looking after one another, starting conversations and reminding people that there is always hope.
