Supporting R U OK? Day 2024

Today is R U OK? Day. Life can throw a lot at us in a year, a month, or even a week. Whether it’s a friend, family member, colleague, partner, or teammate, the people you care about face ups and downs daily. By having regular, meaningful conversations, we build trust and make it easier for those around us to share what they’re going through.

Football Director, Greg Hanlon, shared the importance of R U OK? in a sporting club.

“Sport brings us together and teaches us the value of teamwork, but it’s also important to remember that the pressures of both sport and daily life can weigh heavily.”

“As a team, we must look out for each other and make checking in a regular part of our routine. By asking ‘R U OK?’ and truly listening, we create a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and can be their best on and off the field.”

So, while R U OK Day is our National Day of Action, remember: Ask R U OK? Any day of the year. A simple conversation can make a world of difference.

Over $1800 raised for St Mary’s

Thanks to the amazing families and individuals in our community, we raised an impressive $1,840 for St Mary’s through the Toyota Good For Footy raffle.

This year, we not only met but exceeded our fundraising goal, surpassing last year’s total of $1,100. Fingers crossed one of you drives away in a brand new car or scores another fantastic prize!

Preparing for R U OK? Day 2024

This Thursday 12 September, we will again be supporting R U OK? Day.

This annual day of action encourages us to have genuine conversations about mental health and make a real difference in someone’s life. Often, the people we care about may not openly express their struggles, but small signs of change in their behaviour can indicate they’re not OK. If you suspect someone is struggling, initiating a conversation can be a vital first step.

Here’s some resources from R U OK? Day so you’re prepared to have mental health conversations:

WIN A CAR: Support St Mary’s

Last chance to make a difference for St Mary’s and drive away in one of three brand new Toyota’s. Plus, there’s tonnes of other great prizes up for grabs too!

Good for Footy is Toyota’s grassroots footy program. Toyota generously provides all the prizes for the raffle and local clubs like St Mary’s get all of the proceeds.

Tickets are just $5 and 100% of the proceeds bought through our fundraising page go to our Club.

Last year we raised $1100 while other clubs in the NFNL raised over $20k. Let’s strive for better this year to improve our Club.

Raffle closes 11:59am Monday 9 September unless sold out prior.

Star players invited to the League’s Best & Fairest night!

We’re thrilled to announce that players across all our teams have been honoured with invitations to the NFNL’s Best & Fairest Night on September 18th!

This event is a celebration of exceptional talent and sportsmanship, and we couldn’t be prouder of the following players who have been recognised for their outstanding performances:

  • Senior Men’s Football: Rory Hanlon
  • Netball: Clare Nicholls
  • Senior Women’s Football: Brigid McEntee, Georgia Kitchell & Elyssa Rees
  • Under 19.5 Football: Vaughn Clamp, Emile Gill-Halmowich

While we’re hopeful for some wins on the night, being recognised among the best players in the competition is already a significant accomplishment. Good luck everyone!

Women’s Health Week 2024

Today marks the start of Women’s Health Week.

This week is all about empowering women, girls and gender diverse people to take control of their wellbeing. With so many women at our club, we’re committed to caring for and supporting health of our female and diverse members.

Each day, there’s a spotlight on a new topic to help you and the women in your life stay healthy. Today’s focus is ‘Know Your Body’—a reminder that regular health checks are key to protecting your health.

Celebrating LGBTQIA+ Youth

Today is Wear it Purple Day, a day to unite to empower LGBTQIA+ youth in our St Mary’s community and across Australia to celebrate who they are and who they are becoming.

This year’s Wear It Purple Day is all about shining a spotlight on the inspiring achievements of the LGBTQIA+ community. By celebrating the powerful accomplishments of LGBTQIA+ role models, we’re not just changing lives—we’re opening doors for rainbow youth and all Australians to dream of brighter, more inclusive futures.

Women are back-to-back Premiers!

A massive congratulations to our Senior Women’s team for winning the Division 1 Premiership today against Diamond Creek! This achievement is even more remarkable as it is only their first season in Division 1 after winning the Division 2 Premiership last year. Not only that, but it’s also their third consecutive grand final appearance—truly a testament to their determination.

Entering the game as the Minor Premiers, our team was the favourite to win, and they didn’t disappoint. Kudos goes to Brigid McEntee, who was named Best on Ground after a standout performance.

A special thank you goes out to our dedicated coaches and volunteers, especially Jessie and Troy Bickerton. Your hard work behind the scenes has been instrumental in getting us to the grand final; we couldn’t have achieved this without you.

Here’s to celebrating this fantastic achievement and looking forward to even more success in the future!

Six women make Team of the Year!

A huge congratulations for the six players from St Mary’s who have earned a spot on the Division 1 Team of the Year – more than any other team! This is an incredible achievement as it’s their first season in the top division, up against regular Division 1 players.

Special kudos to co-captain Elyssa Rees for her impressive fourth consecutive appearance, and to Sarah Johnston for her third selection. Additionally, Meg Girolami, Georgia Kitchell, Brigid McEntee, and Emmison Zealley are all celebrating their second appearances.

Senior Men’s Head Coach Fab Carelli steps down

It is with both gratitude and sadness that we announce Senior Men’s Head Coach Fab Carelli has decided to resign.

Fab joined us for the 2018 season, bringing with him a wealth of leadership and expertise from his already impressive coaching and playing career. His impact was immediate and he guided us to a Premiership in his first season, propelling us from Division 3 to Division 2.

Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Fab kept the team engaged and motivated, culminating in our historic maiden Division 2 finals appearance in 2023.

Club President Mark Stanley expressed our thanks.

“Fab has been a cornerstone of our club’s growth and success over the past seven years. His passion, resilience, and leadership have left a lasting impact on everyone here at St Mary’s. We are deeply grateful for all he has done.”

We all extend a huge thank you to Fab for his efforts and contributions to the club. Though his role as Head Coach is coming to an end, we look forward to continuing to see him around the club and to his ongoing involvement with our community.
