Hi everyone,
This weekend we will ‘band together’ to support the AFL Victoria and TAC Victoria Road Safety Round, donning blue armbands to honour the lives touched by road trauma and promote road safety in our community.
Many factors can contribute to unsafe driving. However, distracted driving a major contributor to road trauma. Shockingly, studies have shown that drivers on their phones are 10 times more likely to be involved in an accident.
Remember, distractions extend beyond mobile phones. You could be distracted by your GPS, eating a snack, a smartwatch, or even a passenger. Just two second with your eyes off the road doubles your risk of crashing. To put it in perspective at 50km p/h, you would travel 28 metres in 2 seconds – roughly the length of a cricket pitch.
If you’re caught using a phone or other device, you’ll be fined $555 and lose four demerit points. For a p-plater that means only one demerit point left. So don’t risk it – follow TAC’s safety tips including turning on do not disturb or putting your phone and other devices out of reach while driving.
We support TAC’s vision of no deaths or serious injuries on our roads. That’s why I urge each and every one of you actively participate in the TAC Club Reward Road Safety initiatives this year by:
- Completing the TAC Road Safety Survey (select ‘St Mary’s Senior Football Club)
- Submitting a road safety slogan for the next TAC campaign
- Sharing road safety content from us and TAC Victoria
- Having road safety discussions with your friends and family
- Signing our safe driving pledge
- Educating yourself on our road safety hub
Let’s work together to ensure the safety of ourselves, our loved ones, and everyone on the road. Remember, every action you take for road safety will help us earn up to $10,000 that we can invest into our Club.
Stay safe,
Mark Stanley
Club President
